Vài điều cần biết trước: nếu bản dịch dùng cho Sở Di Trú Mỹ (USCIS), KHÔNG cần công chứng — đây là điểm nhiều người nhầm lẫn. Việc tự dịch (do chính đương đơn hoặc người thân dịch) về mặt kỹ thuật được phép nhưng có rủi ro thực sự — viên chức có thể đặt câu hỏi về xung đột lợi ích. Nếu bản dịch dùng tại Việt Nam: cần hợp pháp hóa/apostille giấy tờ gốc TRƯỚC, sau đó mới dịch, rồi mới công chứng bản dịch — không làm ngược thứ tự này.A few things worth knowing upfront: if your translation is for USCIS, notarization is NOT required — this is a common point of confusion. Self-translation (by the applicant or a close family member) is technically allowed but carries real risk — officers may question a conflict of interest. If your translation is for use in Vietnam: legalize/apostille the original FIRST, then translate, then notarize the translation — not in the reverse order.

Vì sao? Tiêu chuẩn dịch thuật khác nhau tùy nơi sử dụng — bản dịch dùng cho USCIS có yêu cầu khác với bản dịch dùng tại cơ quan Việt Nam, nên xác định đúng nơi đến ngay từ đầu giúp tránh phải dịch lại. Why? Translation standards differ by destination — a USCIS-bound translation has different requirements than one for a Vietnamese authority, so confirming the destination upfront avoids redoing the translation.

Bản dịch phải khớp với nơi sử dụng. USCIS chỉ cần bản dịch sát nghĩa kèm giấy chứng nhận của người dịch — dịch được ngay từ ảnh chụp. Hồ sơ dùng tại Việt Nam thì bản dịch phải công chứng và thường đính kèm bản gốc đã Apostille, nên thứ tự là Apostille trước, dịch sau. A translation must match where it will be used. USCIS needs only a faithful translation with the translator's certification — it can be done from a photo. For use in Vietnam the translation must be notarized and usually bound to the apostilled original, so the order is apostille first, translate second.
